Must Know Skills To Master Social Media?

When most of us use social media, we're goofing off.

But for a lucky subset of America, being on Facebook, X and the rest . . . is part of the job! Which begs the question: What exactly do you need to master, if you want a corporation or nonprofit to hire you as a social media wizard?

The right way to find out is to cull through mountains of job ads, taking note of the exact skills being sought. That's what Zippia, a career-resources site, has done. The result: a fascinating new list of the 15 social-media skills or competencies that sit at the top of employers' lists.

The most in-demand skill: knowing your way around Facebook Insights. More than $20 billion a year is spent on Facebook advertising -- which creates plenty of work for people who help run such initiatives. If "targeting," "optimization" and "cost-per-click" intrigue you, that's a good sign.

Bear in mind: We've rapidly moved past the days when collecting a lot of "likes" or followers was enough to convince your bosses that a social-media presence on Facebook was a success. The Facebook dashboard for creating and tracking social-media campaigns is as intricate as a church organ. Success means being able to work it carefully -- and boldly.

The second most-demanded skills relate to Twitter, which can be a lot more turbulent than the orderly world of Facebook advertising. Some companies achieve winning results with offbeat Twitter campaigns. What's universal, though, is a desire to monitor Twitter for signs of customer indignation ... and to have crisis-minded specialists on hand who can deal with unexpected disruption.

Rounding out the list of the five most in-demand skills: Instagram, online presence and company website -- all of which are shown in blue in the graphic above. After that, the five skills in green, which call for expertise in platforms such as YouTube, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Tumbler. Beyond that, the skills in in orange, which related more to traditional marketing and public-relations duties, such as customer service, content strategy and press releases.

Do employers across the United States all want the same basic skills? Intriguingly, the answer is no. Zippia's content marketing editor, David Luther, observes that "social media managers who live in the same region tend to list similar skills, though they differ from those who live in other regions. You can almost predict what part of the country a resume comes from."

Zippia's data team split job ads into three regions: East Coast (led by the New York City region), Heartland (led by Chicago) and West Coast (led by Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area. "Facebook Insights and Twitter are the top two skills across the board," Luther said, "but it seems like the heartland prefers to use social as a functional part of the (sales) funnel, the West Coast values social media for its own sake, and the East Coast is all about analytics."

How YOU Become A Social Media Pro?

Social media has become an integral part of today's lifestyle and there are millions of posts everyday on multiple social media sites..

But how do you make sure that you stand out from the crowd? Here are some tips and tricks to help you make your mark online.

    Use Free Stock Images

Social posts with a visual or two always catch the eye better compared to plain text.

This means you can get increased interactions — provided you use relevant images that can help readers understand your post better.

To avoid getting into issues over copyright, don't just pick up random images from the Internet. You should use your own images as far as possible. Another way is to get images from stock websites that offer them for free.

Check out www.unsplash.com, www.pexels.com, http://picjumbo.com and http://pixabay.com to start – images here are available free for use and the sites are regularly updated with new content.

Hootsuite for Scheduling, Analytics & Integration

It's not possible for you to be on social media all the time. But to keep followers/fans interested in your content, you need to push out updates regularly.

To solve this dilemma, take a look at Hootsuite — it lets you schedule posts for the future. Sign up for a free account that lets you manage up to 3 social media profiles from a single dashboard.

You can schedule up to 30 messages in advance across different social platforms and even get a basic analysis of how each post does in terms of reachability and response. If you want access to more profiles, detailed analytics and other advance features, you will need to opt for one of the paid plans.

    Automate Tasks With IFTTT

Almost everyone wants to be present on multiple social media platforms. For maximum reach, you would like to post updates on all the platforms.

The trouble is, it's a pain to open each website/app to post the same status everywhere.

You can save a lot of time by automating cross platform posts using the free IFTTT (IF This Then That) app/service. First, you need to sign-up for IFTTT with Google or Facebook.

Once you log-in, you can head to the social media category and choose from a list of preset combinations for social media posts.

Keep in mind you will have to connect each service with IFTTT first. Once you have done that, you can choose to have posts from one social platform automatically posted everywhere else.

    Get Better at Hashtags

Hashtags help identify a topic on social media. When you use a hashtag — identified by the hash (#) character — the term becomes discoverable/ searchable on social media, which increases your reach to include people who may not be directly connected to you.

This is why using the right hashtags is very important.

The trouble is, not everyone understands what hashtags to use. One simple way to solve this issue is to use websites that provide relevant hashtags — check out https://ritetag.com and http://hashtagify.me as a start.

On your smartphone, you can get the free TagsDock Keyboard app (available for iOS and Android). The keyboard requires you to select a category and then shows you relevant hashtags. The free version of the app gives you 10 hashtags for each topic — for more hashtags you will need to get the full version of the app by paying US $0.99.

    Getting Verified

Having a verified account on social media has a number of benefits (depending on the platform) including improved reach, access to detailed analytics and the added trust factor.

You'll find that you also start to get more followers if you have a verified account. This means that everyone wants to get the verified status, though it's not that easy to get.

    Facebook

Facebook does not verify personal accounts. However, if you have a business page/profile, you can apply for that to be verified. On your Facebook page, go to Settings > General — if you are eligible, you will see an option for Page Verification. You can verify via a call or by submitting documents requested by Facebook — once your page is verified, you will see a checkmark in front of your page name.

    Twitter

Twitter's process for getting verified used to be simple. You just had to head to https://verification.twitter.com/ and add your twitter handle, submit relevant documents and Twitter would check your credentials. However, at the moment, the verification process is on hold. There is some controversy regarding verification because of the perception that a verified badge bestows some sort of importance. Twitter just used the verified badge to prove that the account is 'authentic'. A new verification process is expected to roll out soon.

    Instagram

Like Facebook, Instagram only awards the verified badge to a public figure. However, unlike Facebook, Instagram does not let you request for a badge.

These are awarded automatically by Instagram for accounts that are highly prone to impersonation. Don't assume that if your Facebook page gets verified, you will automatically get a verified badge on Instagram.

    Etiquette In A Nutshell

What you do on social media is a representation of you on the Internet. Just like in the real world, there are certain etiquette that have to be followed when you are posting on social media sites.

    Don't Spam

Don't send the same message/post again and again on social media — this will lead to people either blocking you or reporting you which could lead to your account being suspended.

Don't Tag Random People in Posts/Photos

Never tag a bunch of random people on your post. Tagging someone without knowing them (or the post being relevant) will just lead to more people reporting you for spam.

    Excessive Hashtags

While hashtags are easy way to get your post reach more people, overuse of them is a big no no. Flooding each post with hashtags will make your look desperate and is generally frowned upon.

    No Abusive/Obscene Posts

There are users of all ages on social media so take care not to post abusive language or obscene content on posts, your profile or as a comment.

      Becoming A Social Media Rockstar?

Social media seems like an easy and appealing career, right? You usually work from home, and all you have to do is be yourself..

Not so fast, buckaroo. Before you go charging off on your quest for social media fame, there are a few things you need to know.

Social media professionals are in demand, but getting the really plum jobs can be challenging. Much like sales careers, you have to prove yourself before big companies - with big payrolls - will be willing to consider you. Here are some steps you can take to stand out from your competitors and land a prestigious job in social media.

      Build Your Own Network

Your loyal followers are a big plus. If you have the personality to build a big network on your own, building a brand network should be easy. Plus, your followers will help you launch your career with the brand. An engaged following is a huge leg up on your competition, especially if you can point out that your audience fits the demographic of the business you're applying to. If you want to work for a specific type of company, say retail fashion, cultivate a following heavy in young women.

      Protect Your Personal Brand

Social media is built on personality. Potential employers will search for you on every social network. Your online presence should be consistent, professional and interesting across every platform. Post with reputation management in mind, and that includes minding what groups you join, who you interact with and what photos you're tagged in. Potential employers really don't need to know about that drunken college weekend in Cabo. Plenty of people lose their jobs for doing something horrible on social media or when a video ends up online (not safe for work - bad language).

      Include Customer-Service Skills and Experience

Contrary to popular opinion, social media is not only about delivering clever one-liners. As a social media professional representing a company, you are customer service, marketing and the face of the company. While you are not applying to be a face-to-face or field service representative, your customer-service skills must be on point. Customers will come to you with complaints, issues and kudos. The ability to respond professionally and de-escalate volatile confrontations is a critical social media skill.

      Build Experience

Consider being an intern or volunteering for a business to build experience. Look for a charity, local politician, school or local business and offer to help out, or combine social media with a compatible job. For example, a company blog writer, receptionist or office assistant could volunteer to take on social media and build experience for the next move.

      Get Cozy With Analytics

Let's be honest here - creatives aren't always analytical thinkers. Numbers come hard to some of us. If your aim is to be a social media superstar, suck it up. The social media game is all about analytics. Sure, a big company will have people to analyze data and run numbers, but to do your job right, you need real-time analysis. You need to check the reaction on each post or tweet, figure out what works best and adjust your performance before anyone else sees it. With a basic understanding of analytics, you can show an upward trend instead of waiting for some numbers guy to tell you where you're failing.

      Embrace The Selfie

Some people are just terrible at selfies. It's a skill that takes practice, and selfies are an inevitable part of social media presence. Practice until you can find your best angle and take the picture without fumbling, taking a photo of your finger or taking so long your phone battery dies while you're trying to find the sun.

      Get Certified

While you may not be able to get a college degree in social media (yet), you can get a social media certification by taking a comprehensive online course. Take advantage of any educational opportunity you can find. Classes and certifications look great on a resume and show employers you're serious about your career.
